Paris to Amsterdam by private car — one car, no changes

Paris to Amsterdam is the longest of our regular European runs and one that people book for a specific reason: luggage, groups, or a genuine dislike of Brussels-Midi. The train takes three hours twenty on the direct Eurostar service, which is faster, but it is per seat, it is centre to centre, and it does not stop where you want to stop.

By road it is five hundred kilometres and about five hours of driving, through Belgium on the E19. We run it almost entirely one way, and about half of those bookings add Antwerp, Ghent or Bruges as a two- or three-hour stop, which turns a transfer into the more interesting half of a holiday.

The stops that make the drive worth it

Five hours in a car is five hours in a car unless you break it. Antwerp is almost exactly halfway and is the best of the options: the cathedral with the Rubens altarpieces, the Central Station, and a two-hour visit that fits without extending the day much. Ghent and Bruges are slightly further west but both are on a route that adds only thirty to forty minutes.

Rotterdam and Delft are the other direction, in the last hour before Amsterdam, and work if you would rather see modern Dutch architecture than another medieval centre.

Luggage, and why this run exists

A significant share of these bookings come from people who have discovered that moving four adults and eight suitcases across an international rail network is genuinely unpleasant. In a people carrier the cases go in once and come out once. There is no lifting onto racks, no changing platforms at Brussels-Midi and no sprint for a connection.

Amsterdam addresses and the canal ring

Much of the canal ring is restricted to local traffic and a lot of hotels sit on streets that a coach cannot enter. A private car can get considerably closer than any group transport, and your driver will know which bridges are open and which quays allow a two-minute stop for unloading. Tell us the exact hotel address when you book rather than just ‘Amsterdam’.
