Long-distance taxi from Paris — a fixed price, not a meter

A licensed Paris taxi can legally take you to Mont Saint-Michel. What it will do is run the meter for eight hours and charge you for the empty return leg under the rules for a course hors zone, and you will not know the total until the end. Most visitors who ask a taxi for a long journey are quoted something between €1,600 and €2,500 and decline.

Paris Long Trip is a licensed VTC — private hire — which is the other half of the same regulated industry in France. Taxi or VTC — the difference in one paragraph

In France a taxi holds a municipal licence, may use a rank, may be hailed in the street and charges on a meter at rates set by the prefecture, with supplements for luggage, extra passengers, nights and Sundays. A VTC operates on pre-booking only, cannot be hailed, cannot use a meter, and must give the price in advance.

For a five-minute hop across the Marais the taxi is the right tool. For a four-hour journey to Normandy the meter is the problem, and a pre-agreed VTC fare is the answer. Both are legal, licensed and insured; you are not choosing between a regulated and an unregulated service.

This is the list that matters, because it is where the taxi meter and the cheap online aggregators both catch people out. Motorway tolls, fuel, parking at the destination, your driver’s waiting time however long it runs, a delayed flight, night hours, Sunday or public holiday travel, luggage, child seats, a fourth or fifth or sixth passenger, and the empty leg home. None of those generates a supplement, because all of them are already inside the number you agreed.
