The Loire châteaux are spread across a hundred kilometres of river valley, and the ones worth the journey are not the ones near the stations. Chambord has no railway at all. Chenonceau’s station is a request stop with four trains a day. Villandry has none. This is the classic case where the private car is not a luxury but the only sensible way to do it.

From Paris the drive is two and a half hours on the A10. Once you are in the valley the castles are fifteen to forty minutes apart, which means three in a day is relaxed and four is achievable if you start early. The quote covers the whole vehicle, the tolls, the fuel and the parking at every château.

Which three castles to pick

The honest answer is that three is the right number and that they are not interchangeable. Chambord is the scale one: François I’s hunting lodge with 440 rooms, the double-helix staircase and a roofline like a small town. Chenonceau is the beautiful one, arched across the river Cher, and the one that photographs best. Amboise is the historical one, with Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb and a terrace above the town.

If you would rather trade one of those, Villandry has the finest formal gardens in France and Cheverny is the best-preserved interior. Blois is the easiest to combine with anything because it sits in the middle of the valley.

The combinations that work

  • First visit — Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise. The classic, and the one we run most.
  • Gardens — Villandry, Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau. Best from May to September.
  • Interiors — Cheverny, Blois, Chambord. Good in poor weather.
  • With children — Chambord, Cheverny, Clos Lucé. Da Vinci’s machines are the winner.

The order matters more than the choice

Chambord absorbs a crowd because it is enormous; Chenonceau does not, because everyone funnels along the same gallery over the river. So the rule is Chenonceau first, before eleven, then Chambord in the middle of the day when the crowd disperses across the estate, then Amboise late when the coaches have gone.

Doing it the other way round — the order most itineraries print — puts you inside Chenonceau at two in the afternoon, shoulder to shoulder in the gallery. Your driver will know this and will suggest the sequence when you book.

Wine, and why the private car earns its price here

Vouvray, Montlouis and Chinon are all inside the day’s route, and the tasting cellars sit on the road between the castles rather than off it. Nobody in the group has to stay sober to drive, which in the Loire is not a small detail. Tell us in advance and your driver will build in a cellar visit, usually on the way back through Vouvray in the late afternoon.

What makes this journey different

  • Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Villandry, Blois, Cheverny — you choose three
  • Castles are 15–40 minutes apart once you are in the valley
  • Driver parks and waits at each one; no meter, no hourly extra
  • Wine tasting stop in Vouvray or Amboise on request
  • Also runs one way if you are continuing to Bordeaux or the south

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit the Loire Valley castles in one day from Paris?

Yes — three châteaux in a day is comfortable with a private car and an early start. The drive is 2 h 30 each way on the A10 and the castles themselves are 15 to 40 minutes apart. Four is possible in summer when the sites close late.

How many Loire castles can we see in one day?

Three is the right number. Each one takes 90 minutes to 2 hours to do properly, and you need the time between them. Four means an hour at each, which is not really a visit.

Which Loire castles are the best?

Chambord for scale, Chenonceau for beauty, Villandry for gardens, Cheverny for interiors and Amboise for history and Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb. A first visit is usually Chambord, Chenonceau and Amboise.

Is a private driver better than a coach tour to the Loire?

The coach tours cover the same three castles but on a fixed timetable, with 60 to 75 minutes at each and no choice of order. A private car costs more for one or two people and about the same from four upwards, and it gives you the whole day and the castle order that avoids the crowds.

Can we do a wine tasting?

Yes. Vouvray, Montlouis and Chinon are all on the route and the cellar visits take about an hour. Add it when you book and it goes inside the fixed price.
